Day 2 - Launceston to Bicheno, 14/4/2015

Launceston to Bicheno.

Day started a bit haphazardly with the Todds (as we later found out) having a late start trying to get petrol and then being unable to find their way back to the directed route.  They ended up taking the short cut to Scottsdale.

This threw the rest of us into a “tizz” when they went AWOL (Alvising without leave). Bernie and Pauline took off in the the MGB to see if they could find them.  Eventually all was sorted and we all met up in Scottsdale and headed off to Ledgerwood.

Ledgerwood (see photo’s) is a delightful almost ghost town which had a line of dying or dead memorial avenue of cypress trees. Instead of cutting them down and leaving an empty space, the art community in the town got together designing and carving the tree trubks and lower branches into a memorial for the fallen soldiers of the town. The workmanship is spectacular and it is well worth a visit.

From here we had a short drive to the Weldborough Hotel for lunch. We did get a small surprise when on rounding a corner we came across a police road block - breathlysing traffic coming from the opposite direction. Traffic being quiet, they seemed more interested in photographing the funny old cars coming along the road. Later at the Hotel, the same police members stopped in for lunch and advised us (for a laugh) that the crusher was on its way to deal with all the “hoons” in the area and we would have a long walk home.
They were in fact a wonderful mine of information on not only about the area but all of Tasmania.  They where great fun, actually made us a bit late leaving for the rest of the day's journey.

Next stop wasa the "Pub in the Paddock" where we gave the celebrity resident pig a beer, adviused that she is now on rations - we could only provide her with one stubby. Getting there we did entertain the locals by initally going up the wrong road and doing a “U” turn in a farmers driveway.  As toll, he did stop each car individually to take a photo.

At the pub we also had a small pittstop when the fan belt died on the Todds Speed 20. Dale had a change of navigator as one of the locals asked if they could have a ride in the Eagle and Maritta was quickly consigned to the Ute for the trip into St Helens (much to the surprise of the rest of the team).  Couldn’t complain though as they helped us push start Norman and Claire’s car (Parsell's Eagle) which was now suffering from a lack of electricity.....  .

From here it was just a short run into Bicheno for our overnight stop.
